We provide a wide array of the most advanced oral dental sugery procedures to address a variety of issues to give you a more beautiful smile, healthier gums, a better bite, and even more restful sleep.
96% of the population do not have jaws large enough to accommodate the third molars, or wisdom teeth, which develop usually in mid to late teen years. Typically, one or more wisdom teeth fail to emerge in proper alignment or fail to fully emerge through the gum line and become "impacted" or trapped between the jawbone and the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause swelling, pain, and infection of the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth may also cause permanent damage to nearby teeth, gums, and bone and can sometimes lead to the formation of cysts or tumors that can destroy parts of the jaw. Therefore, impacted wisdom teeth should be removed or extracted using oral dental surgery.
Other teeth may also become impacted and can cause the same types of problems as impacted wisdom teeth.
Dental implants are an option to replace a tooth or teeth lost due to an accident or infection, or congenitally missing. Implants, tooth root replacements that are surgically anchored titanium posts in the jawbone with crowns attached to them, are an excellent modern alternative to dentures.
We perform procedures to encourage bone growth, or to graft bone to repair defects and prepare your jaws for dental implants.
We may also remove excessive bone growth to improve the comfort or appearance of your jaws.
* Adjust uneven jaw growth. In some individuals, the upper and lower jaw fail to grow equally. This may cause difficulty in speaking, eating, swallowing, and breathing. While some of these issues can be corrected with braces and other orthodontic appliances, more serious conditions require oral surgery to move all or part of the jaws into a new position that is more balanced, functional, and sustainable.
We provide orthognathic surgery and braces to reposition the jaw as necessary to treat protrusive (overbite) or retrognathic (underbite) conditions.
* Improve the fit of dentures. Oral surgery can correct irregularities of the jaws to ensure a better fit. In severe cases, we can add a bone graft to areas where little bone remains.
* Treat Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. The TMJ is the small joint in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. Problems with this joint are common sources of headaches and facial pain. Most patients with TMJ disorders can be successfully treated with a combination of oral medications, physical therapy, and splints. Surgery is an option for advanced cases and when the diagnosis indicates a specific issue in the joint.
Oral surgery is often used to repair fractured jaws and broken facial bones.
We can take a small sample of abnormal growth or tissue and then send it for laboratory testing for identification. Some lesions can be managed medically or can be removed in our office.
Pain and swelling in the face, neck, or jaws may indicate an infection. Infections in this area of the body can sometimes develop into life-threatening emergencies if not treated promptly and effectively. We can assist in diagnosing and treating this problem. Surgical treatment, if needed, may include cutting into and draining the infected area as well as addressing teeth that might be involved.
We can perform incision, drainage, and other treatments necessary to control the pain and infection of abcesses or cellulitis.
When more conservative methods fail to alleviate this problem, surgery may be effective. Removing the soft tissues of the oropharynx (an area in the back portion of the mouth) or the lower jaw using laser surgery is a treatment option available at Sun Dental Practice. The laser is used to either slowly scar the palate, which tightens it, or to remove palate tissue.
