If you need an implant – but do not have enough bone volume to support the implant - you will typically need a bone graft. Bone loss can be the result from periodontal disease, injuries, cysts, infections or an extracted tooth.
When a tooth needs to be replaced with an implant and a crown, your jaw bone must have an adequate amount of bone in order to place and support the implant. By grafting bone to the implant site, the graft will help replace missing bone, stimulating new bone formation and increasing existing bone volume. This will allow for the implant to support added dental restorations, improving your smile and your oral health.
Normally, it can be determined if you will need a bone graft from your x-ray or CT scan prior to surgery. If it is determined that you need a bone graft for implant purposes, several visits will be necessary to complete the procedure.
Bone grafting can also be used to repair certain periodontal bone defects, or prevent bone defects with oral surgery.
