Sleep apnea syndrome is a deceptive sleep disorder - 90% of the victims of sleep apnea don't even realize that they have the symptoms! Episodes of choking or gasping for air may occur hundreds of times every night, without any awareness or memory of struggling for breath. It is often only the apnea sufferer's bed partner who notices the breathing difficulties. You may have sleep apnea if you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night's sleep. If left untreated, this common disorder can be life-threatening. Treatment is necessary to avoid heart problems and other complications. Fortunately, Dr. Sun can now provide new sleep apnea treatments that reduce the effects of Sleep Apnea and improve your ability to breathe comfortably.
Now there are new, practical remedies that can be provided by Sun Dental Group. Obstructive sleep apnea may be treated by opening your airways and using a nightly mouth guard, custom fitted for you in our office.
The oral appliance (night guard) is designed to keep your throat open as you sleep. Oral appliances may be easier for you to use. Some are designed to open your throat by bringing your jaw forward, which can sometimes relieve snoring and mild obstructive sleep apnea. A number of devices are available from Dr. Sun. You may need to try different devices before finding one that works for you. Once you find the right fit, you'll still need to follow up with Dr. Sun at least every six months during the first year and then at least once a year after that to ensure that the fit is still good and to reassess your signs and symptoms.
Sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disease, headaches, memory loss, weight gain, and impotency. The effects of sleep apnea have been shown to impair productivity and have been implicated in automobile accidents. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated by Dr. Sun.
Oral appliances, sometimes called dental appliances, treat apnea by keeping the airway open in one of three ways: by pushing the lower jaw forward (a mandibular advancement device or MAD), by preventing the tongue from blocking the airway (a tongue-retaining device), or by combining both methods. The most common type of oral appliance, a MAD is often adjustable so that the dentist can move the jaw further or reduce the advancement as necessary. The goal is to find the most comfortable and effective position for the patient. Not all dentists have the necessary knowledge to treat sleep apnea.
